Handheld recorder for short-form videos

Making a GIF is a process. You have to shoot video, download it, edit it, and then process it as a GIF. What if a camera made one for you? GIPHY Cam was designed to do just that.

Press and hold a button to capture for up to 20 seconds. Release to stop. To make the process feel mechanical and a little more fun, we added a built-in clacking motor that provides haptic and audio feedback so it sounds like a film reel is rotating inside.

01 —Prototyping

As the user is recording a GIF, lights in the viewfinder communicate capture status. An on-device display shows the number of shots remaining as well as the battery level. To recharge the battery and retrieve images, we built in a fold-away USB cable for charging. The housing is a translucent dyed with various colors to invoke a 90’s aesthetic.

Planeta created a desktop computer App which works like this: after you connect the camera to your computer using the built-in USB cable, the App extracts the GIFs and posts them to your GIPHY account online and companion product, the IRL Frame.
