Emergency Medication Access

MedLocker® by Belay is an innovative, wall-mounted smart technology station designed to securely store emergency medications, such as epinephrine auto-injectors (e.g., EpiPen, Auvi-Q, Adrenaclick) and naloxone (Narcan) for opioid overdoses. Unlike traditional storage solutions that rely on locks and keys, the MedLocker’s patented design incorporates advanced security features, including an alarm system and a WiFi-enabled video camera that activates whenever the station is accessed. This ensures the medications are both secure and quickly accessible during emergencies. Administrators are notified via alerts and provided with footage each time the cabinet is opened, enhancing oversight and security. The MedLocker is ideal for use in schools, daycares, universities, and other public venues throughout the U.S. and Canada. Belay also offers medication management, replenishment services, and accredited training programs, along with a companion App available on the App Store and Google Play for added accessibility and user support.

01 —Industrial Design & Mechanical Engineering

Tomorrow Lab led the product’s physical design and structural development. The MedLocker was built using durable yet cost-efficient materials such as bent sheet metal, extruded aluminum, and acrylic panels. The design minimized the use of custom injection-molded plastic parts, which reduced manufacturing costs and simplified assembly. The cabinet’s internal chassis, crafted from stamped sheet metal, securely houses all electronic components, while custom-configurable trays hold various medications. The overall industrial design reflects a cohesive material story, with aluminum bumpers for durability and an acrylic front door that unifies the aesthetic. Graphic labels were incorporated to add branding and provide clear usage instructions at a low cost. Additionally, the bumpers were designed in multiple colors and finishes, allowing for easy branding customization and seamless integration into diverse environments.

02 —Electrical Engineering, Firmware, & User Experience Design

Our electrical engineering team developed a custom door-switch-based alarm system that activates lights and a siren when the door is opened without disarming the system. The alarm is disabled using an included magnetic wand. A WiFi-enabled webcam integrates into the system, capturing images of anyone accessing the cabinet and sending real-time alerts to administrators. This setup ensures a balance of security, functionality, and ease of use, making the MedLocker both highly effective and user-friendly.
