Alvio
Lung Strength Training Game

Alvio turns your iPhone or iPad into a health gaming device for increasing your lung strength. Similar to a spirometer, Alvio works by measuring the inspiratory (inhaling) and expiratory (exhaling) forces created by your lungs. An air pressure sensor inside the unit reads the pressure offsets created by your breathing and are transmitted to the iPhone/iPad for gameplay. The data is used to incentivize a fun exercise experience for athletes, children, and others looking to improve their lung strength. Tomorrow Lab conducted the Electrical Breadboarding & Engineering, Mechanical Breadboarding & Engineering, Industrial Design, and Prototyping for the Spiro device. Tomorrow Lab worked with Saturnine Games, LLC of New Jersey to develop the software.

01 — How It Works

The device itself offers 10 levels of air resistance via 10 different sizes of air holes in the base dial of the device. These varying levels of resistance correspond to game levels in the iPad/iPhone app. The device contains no batteries and is powered completely from the iPhone or iPad. The power consumption is very low.

02 — Electrical Engineering

In the early stages of the design, we developed breadboards to confirm the breathing apparatus could communicate with the App to read the air resistance. We designed a custom PCB to integrate into the device. Testing also included a variety of sensor types to find the right size for the design and read the air flow properly.

03 — Product Architecture

To ensure that the device conveyed a medical feel, yet fit that brand to be also playful, the feature strategy enforced a simple design with low power consumption, an easy breathing tube, and uncomplicated level controls. In addition, the entire mouthpiece is removable for easy cleaning, and there are no moving parts used to measure the lung strength, which means it increases longterm reliability.
