Buca Boot combines the flexibility of a bike basket with the storage security of a car trunk. You can ride without worrying about your stuff! If you’re like us, you can appreciate the ability of having a secure place to store personal items while you enjoy the freedom of by riding a bike in a city. Keep an extra pair of shoes, a rain jacket, or your picnic feast secure as you roll around.

The Buca Boot project was a collaboration between Tomorrow Lab and Graphic Design and Branding firm, Guts and Glory. Tomorrow Lab lead the industrial design, mechanism development, prototyping and manufacturing support of the Buca Boot bike trunk in preparation for their crowdsourcing campaign. Buca Boot — A Bike Trunk For All Your Stuff

01 — Mechanical Engineering

The Buca Boot attaches to a classic bicycle rack through the interior bottom and is secured in place. In order to lock the boot, we designed a double sliding door mechanism that allows the boot to close and lock with the turn of a key. As the key is turned, the mechanism releases the lock and allows the doors to push up and open.

02 — Industrial Design

As we faced the challenges of space, style, and security, we aimed to make a truly useful and flexible accessory for the back of the bike. The requirements included: not too heavy to cause bike tip-over, waterproof on the exterior and interior, easy to attach to the bike, but secure enough not to be removed. The locking mechanism had to be foolproof, but useful when accessing the interior space, so we chose handles to place on top of the doors to open the Buca Boot more easily. Finally, we incorporated pannier bags to each side of the boot for additional storage.

03 — Material Selection

In order for the Buca Boot to be as durable as possible while you’re on the go, we tested multiple materials to choose the right path. The handles are made of brass-plated zinc to deter rust. The shell of the boot is machine molded with shock-resistant material. The pannier bags are made of ripstop nylon and available in a variety of colors. Finally, the wood top is made of marine-grade teak oil wood.
