PLUS Rides™ Inc. is a spinout company from Tomorrow Lab. Starting in 2018, we set out to design an electric kick scooter designed for owning — not sharing. This means we focused on all the details a user would encounter over the lifecycle of owning and living with the product, like carrying, folding, charging, and storing. To manage cost and enable fast repairs, we created a minimal eye-catching design and a product architecture that separates the electronic system from the mechanical systems. The PLUS scooter prototype was shown at CES '22 in Las Vegas and is set for sales launch in late 2022.

01 — Mechanical Engineering Strategy

The core of the mechanical design is the patented spring-assisted folding hinge. Two spring-loaded rotating tumblers connect the front stem and deck into one compact package. This unique design allows the aluminum frame scooter to quickly fold into a very compact height while concentrating the mechanical complexity to just component. A quarter turn of the knob allows you to quickly fold or unfold the scooter.

02 — Electrical Engineering Strategy

The electronic system features a fast-charging 144Wh battery system that offers a 12 mile range and fast 70 minute charge time using the included USB-C charger. We intentionally managed the battery capacity to offer a reasonable balance of range, charge time, product cost, and easier air shipments.

01 — Industrial Design

The product’s other patented features include: two carry handles for easy portability in a variety of carry positions, a hall organizer for enabling a minimal storage footprint in the home/office, and a clever fender-actuated rear drum brake for fast braking (in addition to the electronic brake in the front wheel).
