Hivecell Rugged
Scalable Edge Computing

This project builds off our previous work for Ricker Lyman Robotic Company on the original Hivecell.

In this project, we set out to create a ruggedized, scalable, and modular version of the Hivecell for rugged and remote environments like jungles, deserts, ships at sea, and messy factory floors. The design approach needed to reflect Hivecell's existing design language and create a “box in a box” to provide a reliable, water-resistant, and shock-resistant enclosure for the Hivecell electronics.

01 —Product Design

The Product Design challenges included creating a recognizable and distinct design that can fit in a backpack, be simple to setup and use, and can withstand the harshest indoor and outdoor conditions like those found in off-grid locations, factory floors, ships at sea, and other wet, hot, and cold environments.

02 —Technical Design

Regarding the technical features of the product, the product is designed to be modular and easily scale-up the computing power to meet the customer's needs. We accomplished this by developing a housing that holds up to 6 identical computing bays inside. Fan-assisted, interior air guides route the air over the CPU units to cool them, while a variety of mounting components allow the housings to sit, stand, or hang on a pole.

In addition to the interior modularity, each housing is designed with a set of on-board waterproof cables & associated connectors to allow daisy-chaining of A/C power and ethernet data from one to the other.
