An Advanced Biometric Authenticator

Tomorrow Lab engaged with HYPR Corp to improve upon the off-device biometric authentication sticker. We learned from the successes of the sticker and created a redesigned, featured-up version of the hardware. Just like the HYPR Sticker, the HYPR Token is secure and convenient, and blends seamlessly with either individual users, or across large organizations. The Biometric-One-Time-Password (BOTP) combines public key cryptography and interoperable biometric matching algorithms embedded on the device to allow access to secure platforms with just the swipe of your finger. With helpful features like Bluetooth hardware, an NFC antenna for easy setup, haptic vibration feedback, and a 6 digit OLED display for displaying access codes, the HYPR token is more advanced than other devices on the market. In addition to seeing through the hardware development, Tomorrow Lab also created a market-ready package design.

01 — Form Concept

While the HYPR Sticker is designed to mount to the back of a mobile device, the HYPR Token is designed to be carried on a keychain and grasped in the hand. Using form sketches and several foam and 3D printed models, we developed a compact form factor that is intuitive and comfortable for daily use.

02 — Industrial Design

With a form direction selected, we next developed an Industrial Design whose aesthetics were minimal and allowed for flexible 3rd party branding. The material selection was guided by several constraints, including (1) allowing for Bluetooth and NFC wireless signals to pass, (2) a rear-mounted OLED 6-digit display visible when in use, and (3) strong haptic vibration sensing from embedded ERM motor.

03 — Engineering

Tomorrow Lab lead the Mechanical Engineering to create a fully water-resistant design that is easy to assemble and seal. We partnered with HYPR on Electrical Engineering to develop the PCB and select and test a battery capable of meeting the specific power and size demands for the product.

04 — Production

With a final design finished, Tomorrow Lab fabricated a series of prototypes for testing. We also created a packaging design that responds to HYPR's sales strategy.
