Introducing the Steel Angel Key
Tomorrow Lab was approached by Citi Bike and their parent company, Motivate, to design a special public rental bike rental as a way to reward their members. They help the environment and fellow riders by moving bikes from busy stations to less crowded ones. The volunteers are known as Bike Angels and are provided with a Steel Angel Key to unlock bikes available at the stations.
The Steel Angel Key is the perfect blend of form and function. It features unique segments of the New York City street map, giving it an iconic look while also serving as a useful guide to those who use Citi Bike. Plus, it’s made from a durable steel material that will last long-term and is engraved with the Citi Bike logo.
Citi Bike decided to replace the old white plastic tag with a more unique option. After months of prototyping and iteration, Tomorrow Lab was able to create a design that met the client’s needs. Its sleek and modern design is sure to make a statement, and the beautiful map details add a special touch.
The Steel Angel Key is given exclusively to Citi Bike’s 35,000 volunteer Bike Angels who have earned enough points through their service. This rental bike key gives them access to free rides all over New York City!
To get a Citi Bike key, you need to sign up for the Bike Angels program using their app. You can easily see how to earn rewards by taking the ride you already planned in just a few seconds. By riding more frequently, you can earn various rewards both each month and throughout your membership.
Designing the Perfect Bike Rental Key
At Tomorrow Lab, we value the importance of designing products that meet the needs and preferences of our customers. We worked closely with Citi Bike to ensure that the stainless steel Angel Keyring was exactly what they sought. Our team went through a design process to create the perfect keychain.
Here’s a summary of our process:
- We examined different kinds of metal materials and shapes and created plastic interiors using recycled Citi Bike Keys.
- We tested and refined the design to ensure it was suitable for long-term use.
- Finally, the bike key was engraved with unique segments of a map of New York City over an engraved steel base in the trademark Citi Bike shade of blue.
Thanks to our engineering team’s hard work, hundreds of these keys have been produced and given out to Bike Angels during the summer of 2018 award ceremony. The Steel Angel Key is a unique and special reward that celebrates volunteer service, loyalty, and innovation.
